Relient K @ Summerfest

This is the second time I’ve shot Relient K (the first time being at House of Blues). I have to be honest, I thought the HOB set was much better. This set, while still good, just didn’t seem to have the same energy. Either way, I’m still a fan of most bands that drag pianos around the country with them.

Shooting Notes

I really don’t like shooting shows in daylight, as I gripe everytime I post an outdoor set…part of the fun of shows if the bright colors (even if I do curse red lights all the time). However, the light was at least partially diffused, which helped with shooting difficulty. But, on the positive side, there was a huge cheering crowd behind me, which always does make shooting a bit more fun.

I shot with the typical festival line-up – the 70-200mm and the 24-70. I definitely favored the 70-200mm because the stage was extremely high so I needed the extra reach.

One thing I do wish that I had done was get more shots of Matt Thiessen at the piano, but the high stage just didn’t allow for good angles. I just don’t feel the set is complete without some piano shots.

End note: This set is dedicated to my friend Sam, because she’s been not so subtly hinting that she wanted to see these shots for a while. Oh, and she’s a huge Relient K fan.
